Whales In Space Bookmarks by DutchOrca
Whales In Space Bookmarks
These bookmarks and other I did are for sale on My Etsy Shop  I also do custom orders for these, the listing is also in my Etsy!

Two more of the '"dreamy" bookmarks. Copic Various inks painted and dripped onto the paper like watercolor. I made these a little bolder than the first ones I did and I absolutely love them!
I covered the whales in masking fluid before coloing the background but the inks seeped underneath despite that. On the previous bookmarks I spent a lot of time making the undersides white again but on these bookmarks I decided to leave the colors since I really love the effect. Almost as though they are reflecting the background.

Copic marker, black and cool grey multiliners, white gelpen on Strathmore Bristol Vellum paper.
Time taken: 2 hours

(My sister called them Whales In Space when she saw them so I decided to use that name ;))

I've had the idea for this in my head for a long time. I've also started drawing this scene a few times and it took me a few tries to get something I liked.
This is a pretty political piece; I'm against captivity for large, intelligent, self-aware mammals like orca's.

And I've been wondering about this for a long time. There have been instances where a wild-caught orca was played the calls of it's family pod and while we cannot certainly say that they recognize the calls, the animals do react to them. And that made me wonder if they remember the family they were taken from.
And this goes for mothers in captivity as well; when a park decides they or one of their offspring has to move to another park, they're taken away. Do they remember their calves? And are they haunted by the memories, wishing they were still together or do they enjoy thinking about them? Maybe it gives them hope?

(I realize that there will always be people who will argue that this is very much
anthropomorphizing. And they'll say that we don't know how or what they think or feel at all. Those same people will often turn around and claim the animals are capable of forming deep relationships or bonds with their trainers. But for me, knowing how close the bonds between orca's are, having seen them react to calls of familiar animals, caring for sick or injured animals and knowing how important close bonds are to their life, I cannot stop thinking about it which is why I made this.)

The orca featured in this is Tilikum, a wild-caught Icelandic male orca currently living at Sea World Orlando. Tilikum is unfortunately well-known for being involved in the deaths of thee people. He regularly spends time alone seperated from the other orca's, sometimes lying motionless at the surface (logging). And after seeing a video of him doing just that, I got the thought that inspired this piece.

Medium: Copic Markers, white gelpen on Perfect Coloring Paper (Love this paper! The Copics flow so smoothly and you can blend forever)
Time taken: about eight hours, start to finish

(I don't mind if you have a different view on captivity. But please keep in mind that I did not make this to offend or hurt anyone, this is my personal opinion and everyone is free and more than welcome to disagree with me as long as we all stay civil!)

This artwork is protected by both visible and invisible watermarks, so no stealing!

Time taken: about an hour and a half
