J50 by DutchOrca
J50
Etsy  Tumblr

I made a video of myself drawing this! You can see this and other video's on my  Youtube Channel

A small drawing of J50, an as of yet unnamed Orca calf. J50 is a Southern Resident and the daughter of one of my favorite orca's, J16 Slick.
The marks near her dorsal fin are rakes, caused by the teeth of other orca's. Scientists studying this population think they were caused when other orca's wanted to help with the birth and pulled at the baby the only way an orca can; with their teeth. These days J50 is a healthy young orca and the rakes don't seem to bother her.

I inked the drawing with a Black 0.1 Copic Multiliner. I then put down a base coat with C3, Cool Gray. This way I know which parts to color and which to keep white and it helps with blending the following layers. I then used C8 for the darkest part, her underside and blended that out with C6 and finally C4 on top. Copics dry lighter so I applied several coats.

Her saddle patch was colored with W3, Warm Grey. And I added detail to her white parts with W1 and W00.
The reflections and the detail to the rakes were done with a white gelpen. And I used Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils for the smaller details in the mouth, the eye and on the tail.

Commission Prize: Tsuchi Bookmark by DutchOrca
Commission Prize: Tsuchi Bookmark
Etsy  Tumblr

This was the prize for a giveaway on my Tumblr blog and the winner requested a bookmark of J31 Tsuchi, a Southern Resident Killer Whale!

When I started I had no idea about the background yet but this came out, a Kelp Forest. Orca's love swimming through kelp.
I had a lot of fun working on this and it wasn't easy to ship it off ;)

Medium: Copic Markers, white gelpen and Faber Castell Polychromos pencils on Perfect Coloring Paper
Time taken: about two hours, start to finish

(Sorry about the small size, I forgot to scan this before sending it off so all I have is a phone photo!)

Beach Rubbing A23's WIP by DutchOrca
Beach Rubbing A23's WIP
WIP I'm currently working on!
Some orca's, the Northern Residents, are known to seek out certain pebble beaches for a nice rub and massage. This drawing shows that behavior.
The orca's shown are or were actual Northern Residents. The big male at the front is Okisollo, next to him his sister Ripple and her calf Midsummer. At the back the mother of Okisollo and Ripple, Stripe with her other young offspring, Fife. Sadly both Okisollo and Stripe are no longer alive.

These orca's are the family of one of SeaWorld's oldest orca's, Corky2. Currently almost 50 years old and captured by SeaWorld in 1969 in British Columbia, Canada.
