Day 38. Orca by DutchOrca Day 38. Orca by DutchOrca
Day 38 of 365.
Card Theme: Marine Mammals

Orca or Killer Whale, Orcinus orca
IUCN Red List status: Data deficient, meaning there isn't enough data to determine the status of this animal, i.e. nobody really knows how many there are left...

Copic marker, copic multiliner, white gelpen on Strathmore Bristol vellum paper, 2,5 by 3,5 inches. This image is as large on the screen as it is in real life.
Time taken: 2 hours

Considering how much I love Orca's, it's a little strange that this is the first time I have drawn one... I have to do a bigger piece soon ;)
The whale itself is colored entirely with Cool Grays, no black marker used! Love how it turned out!

EDIT, about the reflections on the whale:
I mainly used a gel pen to create the initial lines and then colored over the reflections when they dried. I then went back and added some new lines with the gel pen to get a variation of brightness.
I also went back and added lighter (with the colorless blender) and darker patches between the reflections with the markers. To prevent smudging at either stage of this process, wait until the gel pen has dried.
Might do a full tutorial on this if anybody wants to see it described in more detail and with pictures.

I love how you did the water reflection on the back of the whale. I can never get that right.

Thanks, that worked out really well with this card. I described what I did to a comment above and added that to the description. Maybe I'll do a tutorial to show my process one day ;)

Thank you, the water effect worked really well on this card. I mainly used a gel pen and partly colored over the reflections when they dried and then added some new lines to get a variation of brightness. I also went back and added lighter (with the colorless blender) and darker patches between the reflections with the markers.
Hmmm, might be a good idea to put this in the artist description...

So beautiful! The Orca really does seem to be moving through the water...and the reflections across her....amazing! Your cards just keep getting better! Keep going and one of these drawings are going to get up off the card!

Thanks tarp
This one came out great, there's something about aquatic animals that makes them look good in my style :)

Get up of the card? I just hope I'm drawing something friendly when that happens! ;)

yeah, I did! :)
And she didn't swim off the page!
I know, I neglect my deviation messages too. I check them everyday but I just delete the ones I don't like. When I see something interesting I tend to leave it in there, until I have more time to look and maybe comment.
